Habitats at Zoo Miami

Zoo Miami spans 750 acres and uses natural barriers like moats and hedges to create immersive, cageless exhibits. With 4 miles of walkways, you can explore themed sections like Asia, Africa, and the Amazon. Start at the main plaza, where you can grab a map or rent a bike to make the most of your visit.

  • Asia: Observe tigers, rhinos, and Komodo dragons in surroundings designed to reflect their native habitats.
  • Africa: Stroll through open savannas with giraffes, zebras, and elephants. The meerkat exhibit is one of the most popular stops in this section.
  • Australia: See kangaroos, koalas, and cassowaries, and learn about Australia’s unique environment.
  • Amazon & Beyond: Discover creatures of the Amazon, including jaguars and tropical birds, as you explore lush, shaded trails.

You’ll find shaded rest stops, dining areas, and interactive displays along the way.

History of Zoo Miami

Zoo Miami, originally founded in 1948 as Crandon Park Zoo on Key Biscayne, has come a long way since its early days. After Hurricane Andrew caused significant damage in 1992, the zoo relocated to its current 750-acre site in southwest Miami-Dade County. Today, Zoo Miami stands as one of the largest zoos in the U.S., known for its spacious, cageless design that mimics the animals’ natural habitats, allowing you to explore wildlife in an immersive environment.

Conservation efforts

Zoo Miami is on a mission to protect wildlife and preserve habitats, both locally and globally. Programs like the Sea Turtle Hospital help rescue and rehabilitate injured sea turtles, giving them a second chance to thrive in the wild. Another key initiative, Our Endangered Neighbor: The Florida Bonneted Bat, focuses on safeguarding one of Florida’s rarest bat species through research and habitat restoration.
